A Brief History of Reading
In pre-literate societies, early humans relied solely on oral traditions to pass down knowledge, culture, religion, and history. Around 5,000 years ago, written language began to emerge in Mesopotamia with the advent of cuneiform. This technology enabled reliable transmission of complex information of laws, accounting and so much more. Greeks and Romans built upon these foundations, creating alphabets, libraries, and cultivating philosophers—critical thinkers who specialized in reason. The Renaissance and the printing revolution of the 1400s further democratized knowledge, making it accessible and affordable to all. Paving paths the way for reformation and scientific revolutions.
Fast forward to the digital age, information becomes abundant and accessible at unprecedented speed and scale. Potentialities for progress and collaboration has never been greater. Yet despite these advances, the role of reading in shaping our cognitive, social, and personal development remains base.
